The famed designer Robert Sonneman has spent over 50 years in design, starting off as an apprentice at lighting designer George Kovacs’ New York store at the young age of 19. Though he had moved to designing home products for iconic American brands, his attention returned to his first choice- lighting. Today he heads Sonneman- A Way of Light, which designs and manufactures lighting products in his signature minimalist style. Of late Sonneman has championed designs that make use of LEDs, which offer color modulation, compact forms and high energy efficiency. Floor Lamps One of Robert Sonneman’s earliest designs- the Orbitor Floor Lamp, is still being sold today. The design is the embodiment of Sonneman’s minimalism and preference for metal forms. The lamp is available in chrome and satin nickel finishes. In addition to the Orbitor, Sonnemann Lighting also sells several newer designs. Both fixed and swing arm lamps are available. Table Lamps Table Lamps offer a retro touch to home décor. They can be best used as a secondary low light source below eye level, say for reading at the bedside, or to illuminate a nook. Robert Sonneman’s newest table lamp, the Quattro 1-Panel LED has been much appreciated. The lamp has specially developed one-panel LED for uniform light throw, while the design itself is minimal, consisting of a flat base with a swing arm Chandeliers and Pendant Lights Chandeliers and hanging pendants add a touch of class to upscale homes. Sonneman Lighting offers a variety of models which add their minimalist and functional design to the décor. Popular models include the Dichroix range, which uses unconventional carbon filament bulbs and the 19-light Orb cluster chandelier. Sonneman’s preference for LEDs comes forward through the Wands range of pendants which resemble hanging wind chimes and the Corona range, which use hundreds of LEDs arranged in ring form for lighting and as prominent design elements. Ceiling Mounts Sonneman Lighting has gone against the usual method of low profile and unobtrusive ceiling fixtures by creating some stunning designs that are both showy and functional. While the Rivoli and Puck ranges are classic in appearance, the startling Dichroix range with vintage style carbon filament lamps and Transparence with its half chromed bulb showcase modernist design. The ceiling mounts are available as both flush and semi flush models. Wall and Bath Sconces Sonneman Lighting offers one- light, two-light, three-light plus sconces, bath bars and swing arm sconces. A variant of the Orbitor floor lamp is also sold as a wall lamp. Sconces serve to break up the monotony of a wide expanse of wall while also highlighting the furniture and choice of paint shade. Bath bars are monolithic in appearance and use concealed light sources covered by glass covers to give off a uniform light output. The sconces use incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps and LEDs, depending on the model. We hope this article on Sonneman Lighting’s offerings has been illustrative of the commitment to simple yet elegant design that has won much appreciation for the designer.
