KABUL, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants, in an attempt to exert pressure on the Afghan government and to engage security forces across the country, are expanding their attacks from south to relatively peaceful northern provinces. In the latest development, Taliban militants attacked security forces in Kunduz province on Saturday, an official said. "The militants attacked a convoy of army and police in Dashti Archi district this morning and the troops returned fire killing four insurgents," army spokesman in the province Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai told Xinhua. He did not say if there were any casualties on the troops. On Friday night, militants attacked a police checkpoint in Burka district of the neighboring Baghlan province injuring a police officer, spokesman for police in the province Jawed Basharat said Saturday. "A gun battle erupted in Burka district on Friday night and as a result, a Taliban commander Mullah Dur Murad was killed and two of his men sustained injuries," Basharat told Xinhua. Taliban militants have so far made no comment. The militants who have expanded activities from their traditional base in the south to the peaceful north, occasionally attack government interests in the northern Balkh, Faryab and northeast Takhar provinces. Chardara district in Kunduz province bordering Tajikistan has been considered as the main base of Taliban militants while in Baghlan province, the Baghlan-e-Markazi district is the hotbed of militants. Taliban influence in both the provinces, which connect Afghan capital Kabul to central Asian states of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, would affect NATO supply line to the militancy-plagued Afghanistan. The militants in a separate incident also on Friday night, fired a rocket in Baghlan-e-Markazi district and killed a police officer, an official said Saturday. "A rocket fired by militants from unknown location hit a police checkpoint in Baghan-e-Markazi district, killing a police officer on the spot," Amir Gul, district chief of Baghlan-e-Markazi, told Xinhua. In both provinces, foreign fighters including militants, according to Afghan officials, are seen fighting alongside Taliban insurgents. Both Kunduz and Baghlan, the two peaceful provinces until early 2009, have been the scene of increasing militancy over the past couple of months.
