KATHMANDU, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The 2nd International Summer School in Food Security and Climate Change began in Nepali capital Kathmandu from Sunday. The summer school which will continue up to June 17 is being jointly organized by University of Pavia, Italy, Himalayan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Kathmandu and International School Advanced Studies Kathmandu. Talking to Xinhua, Professor Maria Sassi, representative of the University of Pavia, said that the summer school aimed at highlighting the issues concerned with food security and climate change. "It is a course designed for comprehensive understanding of food security and climate change issues," Prof. Sassi said. "Nepal and the Nepalese government have been making positive approaches towards the issue of food security and climate change which is very appreciable," she further said. Speaking at the inaugural function of the program, Minister for Education Ganga Lal Tuladhar expressed his commitment and seriousness on behalf of the Nepalese government into the issue. Stating that Nepal is one of vulnerable countries in the world to be fast affected by climate change, former Minister for Environment and Science Ganesh Shah said that it is necessary to raise instant awareness into the issue. "Climate change means either there is no water or more water, both of which affects the growth of food. Thus, climate change and food security are interdisciplinary," he said. Shah also said that out of the 75 districts of the country, 48 are facing acute shortage of food at present, which is different from the past when the country was able to produce surplus food for its entire population. Similarly, talking to Xinhua, Prakash Sharma, coordinator for the summer school, said that the course was open for anyone willing to garner in-depth learning and understanding of food security and climate change issues. "The course is aimed at learning of climate change issues while also enhancing analytical and planning capabilities which will help in addressing the issues not only for the country or the region but also globally," according to Shah.
