How to Select a Commercial Vacuum Cleaner

Business
If you’re confused about how to select a commercial vacuum cleaner, you are not alone. Business owners and facilities managers are often unfamiliar with the differences between residential and commercial vacuums. Many different types of commercial vacuum cleaners are available today, each with specific benefits and drawbacks. Selecting the right one for your business depends on several factors. Read on for some professional tips on choosing the right vacuum cleaner for your business.

Commercial vs. Residential Vacuum Cleaners

Unless you have commercial cleaning or janitorial experience, you may be unaware of the differences between residential and commercial vacuums. Residential models are generally less expensive but less durable, meant to be used only once or twice each week for cleaning a small area. Commercial vacuum models have a higher initial cost, but are designed to endure extended daily use over the course of several years. For this reason, replacement parts are more readily available for commercial units and repairs are easier to make. If a residential product breaks, the consumer typically must return the entire unit to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. Commercial machines offer a wider variety of features and capabilities, whereas residential models, although they may appear diverse, are all essentially similar, offer the same basic features and have limited power and filtration capacity.

Types of Commercial Vacuums

Three basic types of commercial vacuum systems are available today. Upright vacuum cleaners are operated by pushing the machine over the surface to be cleaned. They use rollers and brushes to stir up dirt and debris, sucking it into a storage chamber. Upright units typically allow you to adjust the height depending on carpet pile depth. Many can also be used on hard floor surfaces, although they tend to be less effective on tile, especially smaller tiles with many grout joints. Upright systems may also offer a secondary hose and various attachments.

Canister-type systems are low to the ground, use a suction tube or hose and brush head and are pulled around behind the user. Canister models typically utilize a filter and bag to collect dirt and debris. The third type of vacuum, the backpack unit, is worn over the shoulders. The motor is housed in the backpack, with a hose extending out for ease of use with a variety of attachments. Some models include HEPA filters, and the size and strength of the motor varies based on the user’s needs. The more versatile and powerful the system, the higher the cost.

How to Choose a Commercial Vacuum Cleaner

The right type of machine for your company depends on several factors. If your facility is mostly carpeted, an upright model is the most logical choice. For tile and other hard surfaces, backpack and canister configurations tend to be more effective. Determine the square footage of the area to be cleaned, the type of dirt or debris that is typically present and how often the vacuum will be used. Compare these needs to the specifications of various brands and configurations.

Evaluate also the cost to maintain different models. Filters are either removable or fixed in commercial systems. Removable filters tend to be less effective, but the non-removable type requires professional service for cleaning. Evaluate your facility’s need for special attachment tools versus the area you have dedicated for vacuum storage. Finally, carefully compare manufacturer’s warranties and service policies and determine if a service provider is located in your area.

As an alternative to purchasing a commercial vacuum cleaner for your business, professional cleaning companies can provide daily services that include complete floor cleaning and care. Using a janitorial service may mitigate the need for purchasing a full-size system, allowing you to instead select a small, inexpensive hand-held model to handle any unexpected spill or mess. If you do choose to purchase a full-size model, your office cleaning service can make recommendations and help you select a commercial vacuum cleaner that’s right for your business.
