The Blue Hole or otherwise call the Secret Falls or Irie Hole is Jamaica’s newest natural tourist attraction that is creating frenzy. Situated in the district of Lodge just about 30 minutes south east of resort town of Ocho Rios, the Blue Hole is something to behold and enjoy. At the moment it is not as touristy as some of the others, so now would be the perfect time to enjoy the Blue Hole in its pristine state. The water at this sensational waterfall is blue, fresh and rejuvenating with deep and shallow areas. The name Blue Hole sums up this place well although there are a lot more to it. The azure color of the water is amazing; it is like moving the turquoise Caribbean Sea to mountains and having it tumbling and gushing down over the rocks. The indigenous people, the Taíno, name the island Xaymaca in Arawakan which means land of wood and water because of its many rivers and lush vegetation, also the other meaning is ‘Land of Springs’. There are about 120 rivers on the island most of which flow to the coastal area from the central ranges. Consequently, these mountains provide ample drop offs for the many springs and aqua-ducks to be found in and around these mountains resulting in some of the most majestic water falls. The Blue Hole, Dunn’s River Falls, Sommerset Falls, Reach Falls, YS Falls are some of the better ones to be found on the island which are also easily accessible. However it is arguable, but the Blue Hole ‘Secret Falls’ is the best of them all; visitors to this waterfall can do so much more than at the others. It has many deep pools that allow diving, rope swings, jumping or just Plain River frolics. If you will be visiting the north coast of Jamaica this should be on the agenda.
