Ostrich Feather Types for Centerpieces

Art and Culture,Crafts,Business
Ostrich feathers are being used since ages for decoration and ornamentation. Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra used feathers in her jewelry and fans. Roman officers used them in their head gear to indicate their ranks. Now days, feathers are used for various things including ornaments, dresses, accessories, millinery art and décors. These days, feather centerpieces are very popular in events like, wedding receptions, baby shower, birthday party, corporate event, New Years Eve party, Halloween etc.

Ostrich feathers can make very elegant and unique centerpieces for weddings. They are available in numerous colors like black, white, green, yellow, fuchsia, emerald, pink, lime, grey etc. Ostrich feathers are large in size and exotic in looks, that's why they make stunning centerpieces. We can use different types of ostrich feathers like drabs, spads, femina and floss for making elegant centerpieces.

Types of Ostrich Feathers

Drab: People often confuse drab with plumes and vice versa. Drabs are thinner and shorter than plume feathers. Though, plumes are best feathers for making centerpieces but, if you are not in the capacity to increase your budget, drab feathers give a great alternate to plume feathers. They are available in sizes that can vary from 9inches to 22 inches. They are suitable for making small and medium sized centerpieces. They give a very fuller and rounded effect to the centerpiece.

Plume: Plumes are the best type of ostrich feathers for making centerpieces. They have thick quills and downward dipping tips, making it an excellent choice for wedding centerpieces. Their length varies from 20 inches to 30 inches in length and very fluffier. They are usually washed and fumigated by sellers to give it more fuller look. Plume feathers are dyed in various colors for using in different things. If you are making centerpieces for reception you can buy ostrich feathers in wholesale.

Spad: Spads are the feathers from the tail end of the ostrich. They are not as grand as plumes and drabs. However, after the process of steaming and trimming they can look good. Their height varies from 18 inches to 26 inches. They got this name from a Latin word “spadona” which means “sword sahped” as they are long and thin. They are naturally in light brown and white colors. But, they are dyed or bleached for commercial purposes. Floss: Floss feathers are not very stiff and therefore they don’t look straight like other ostrich feathers. As the name implies, they are quite flossy in looks. They are dyed over their natural colors to give a darker shade. They are great for giving classic or Victorian look to decorations. They are used extensively for making centerpieces.

Femina: Femina feathers are large size plumes and they have longer and thicker quills. Their height ranges from 18 inches to 30 inches. Their width is around 9inches and 10 to 15 femina feathers are sufficient for making a large and full centerpiece. They give a very broad and fuller look to the centerpiece. Femina feathers can be combined with other types of feathers for the best looks.
