Hypnosis is a really interesting topic. It was in the year 1841 that James Braid coined the term Hypnosis, before that it had been known as Mesmerism. The reason Braid wanted to update the name was due to new understandings in how hypnosis actually works. The old practitioners of Mesmerism believed that it was due to some unique power or knowledge they held, which induced the trance like state. But, Dr Braid discovered that it was not down to any magical power the Mesmerist held, but instead the internal mental process of the subject that developed the hypnotic state. Among the earliest known people to publish on auto-suggestion was a man called Emile Coue. The framework for his system was based on Braids findings before him. The idea of hypnosis being more of a self controlled state, in place of one dependent on the hypnotist alone was now becoming popular. The result was anybody could now benefit from this learning to improve themselves. Sigmond Freud who was renowned for his work in psychoanalysis, initially had little belief in the usefulness of hypnotherapy when writing some of his books. Because of his opinion of hypnosis, lots of people dismissed it's use at the time. His regard for hypnotherapy was altered as he learned more about it, sadly this happened later in his life, too late for him to publish on it. It was because of the magicians carrying on the use of hypnosis, that it is still around today. Milton Erickson in the 60's and 70's began working with a method of hypnosis which became known as indirect hypnosis, which has influenced many therapists today. is known with clients that found it hard to achieve hypnosis. A massive influence on hypnosis in that period was Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, whose method was much more authoritative compared to Milton Erickson. Dave Elman is respected for the kind of fast and solution based methods?, often employed by many practitioners today. Elman specialised in educating those in the medical profession in the use of hypnotic anaesthesia, his methods are often used to this day by many in the field of hypnotic childbirth and traditional analysis. The late great Ormond McGill, was known as 'The Dean of Hypnosis', he wrote "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis” and was also well published for his therapeutic work, in which he was excellent. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond died in 2005. A major contributor to hypnosis approaches used today, Gil Boyne died in 2010. A known advocate of Dave Elman, Gill took Stage hypnotist Dave Elmans teachings and developed a unique therapy system. The book 'Transforming Therapies' were the synthesis of his learnings in hypnosis. Through technological advances, modern practitioners have greater access to information than ever before.
