Costa Rica, a small, yet highly enchanting country in Central America has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years due to its interest regarding the welfare of endangered reptile specie, the leatherback turtle. More and more often these days, you hear nature’s cries for help through news regarding species of animals that suddenly disappear. Indeed, mankind should take notice of these problems and make all efforts to provide nature with the required help. Costa Rica is one of those countries that is actively involved in the preservation of leatherback turtles. You might be wondering how this particular country decided to take on a project that is not by far simple. Rescuing endangered specie is often a complex and complicated process, as you have to provide these animals with the correct living and most importantly, mating conditions. In the case of leatherback turtles, the nesting conditions are defining. The Costa Rica turtle conservation program started out in 1989 with the purpose of offering these reptiles the chance to mate and nest without encountering any difficulties. Costa Rica is one of the locations in which leatherback turtles have settled and created appropriate nesting spots. So far it would seem that nature has followed its course, thus the intervention of man is not necessary. The problem only now appears. This particular specie has entered the endangered category due to the many nesting issues that prevent leatherback turtle babies to grow. Once the babies are hatched, they become food for many other animals and reptile species. On their way to the water, baby turtles have to face to various dangers such as dogs, snakes, birds. Their adventure has not yet ended once they reach water. There is another series of dangers that baby turtles have to face up to. Once they enter water, they become pray to cephalopods or requiem sharks, as well as other large fish. For this very reason, many baby Leatherback turtles die in their early life. As mentioned in the beginning, there are countries which have heard the cries of nature and Costa Rica is one of them. Animal rescue organizations found in Costa Rica work with volunteers. For instance, a turtle volunteer in Costa Rica will have to constantly clear out beaches of tree trunks, help baby turtles reach the ocean safely, move nests to hatchery, check to see how many turtle return, eliminate beach dangers and so on. Although it might not seem like much, there are many ways to help nature. Of course, at one point or another you will have to allow it to take its course. In Costa Rica, the conservation of leatherback turtles is an important project and there are several organizations that are actively involved. People are encouraged to take part in this project and help as much as they can, because this reptile specie will slowly disappear if you don’t take action. It would be a shame for this to happen, especially since mankind can prevent this situation from appearing. Want to find out about turtle volunteer in Costa Rica?
