By THE HERALD-WHIG STAFF Cindy Hoover had just the outfit to wear on Saturday night for theMcDonald's/Herald-Whig Classic. Hoover broke out the uniform top she wore when she played in thegame back in 1986. Then known as Cindy Daniels, she was part of anIllinois girls team that suffered an 86-67 loss to Missouri.Earlier her senior season, she helped Pittsfield reach the EliteEight of the Class A state tournament. Her son, Dalton, was part of the winning Illinois team. Dalton Hoover's previous Classic ties don't stop with his mother. His father, Phil, played in the Classic in 1985. He was MostValuable Player of the 1985 Illinois boys team in a 101-77 victoryover Missouri. "I remember taking Dalton to this game a few years ago, and we satin the rafters," Phil Hoover said. "He was looking through theprogram and said, ‘Hey, Dad. There's a guy who has your namehere.'" That's the first time that Phil Hoover had ever told his son thathe was MVP of the game. The Hoovers are the first family in Classic history to have amother, father and son play in the game. Dalton Hoover made the family 2-1 all-time in the Classic. He hit ahuge 3-pointer late in the game to help give the Illinois team someseparation from Missouri in a 93-82 victory. Hoover, a QuincyUniversity signee, finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Some new attire: It won't quite replace his old game uniform, butBegeman acquired some new McDonald's/Herald-Whig Classic garb. Begeman, the Illinois girls coach, played in the 1989 Classic. After that game, he continued to wear his game uniform at anyopportunity — until at some point it went missing. Begeman says jokingly — well, half jokingly anyway — hebelieves his wife, Kelle, or mother-in-law, Marcia Cornwell, had ahand in the uniform's disappearance. "Me and my wife dated in high school, and she said, ‘You worethat to every family function. We could've been anywhere, and youwere wearing this thing,'" Begeman said. "Well all of a sudden, itcame up missing." Now Begeman might have to counteract by wearing the Classic shirtissued to all of this year's coaches whenever he gets the chance. Foul situation: There was plenty of disagreement surrounding the sixth foulassessed to Illinois girls point guard Shannon Foley with 4minutes, 51 seconds remaining in the second half. The official score keeper had Foley with sixth fouls, but Illinoiscoach Brad Begeman tried to insert Foley a couple minutes later, thinking Foley only had five fouls. Players are given six fouls inthe Classic, mimicking NBA rules. Official Rick Gengenbacher told Begeman that Foley couldn't bere-entered because she had six fouls. Foley protested briefly, saying she had only three fouls in the first half and two afterhalftime. Foley's assessment matched the foul total of the game's officialstat keeper and others keeping book at the scorer's table, but notthe official score book. "I think it was some deal where they called one on No. 22 (JaceyHartweg, and instead gave it to No. 2, Foley)," Begeman said. "Wecouldn't do anything about it. I questioned Rick (Gengenbacher),and he said, ‘It's the official score book, and I have to goby it.'" Iron (wo)man: Missouri point guard Randi Lee Plunkett sat out for just a fewseconds of the girls game. She registered 39 minutes — threemore than Illinois' Tori Kuhn, who played the second-most minutes. Missouri coach Mike Johnson, who coached Plunkett at Marion County, said Plunkett was really his team's only true ball handler, so heneeded her on the floor at all times. "With her off the floor, we didn't have a point guard, period,"Johnson said. "She toughed it out as good as she could." Plunkett said she expected to play plenty of minutes, though maybenot quite as many as she did. "Johnson told me before the game and talked with the other girlsthat we didn't have a lot of guards," said Plunkett, Missouri'sMost Valuable Player who had 15 points, eight rebounds, threeassists and three steals. "We had a lot of tall posts. We had someoutside shooters, but we didn't have any point guards. He told mebefore (the game), ‘You're going to play a lot. I'm not goingto sit you a lot.' But 39 minutes, I did not expect." All in the family: When Andy Douglas chose his assistants for the boys game, hecouldn't ask just one of his brothers. He knew he had to ask all three. Sitting next to the Liberty skipper Saturday night were youngerbrothers Aaron, Tony and Alex. One question was never resolved. "We never figured out who was the top assistant," Andy Douglassaid. That was an appropriate question. Andy Douglas was charged with atechnical foul as a Quincy High School player in the 2000 game. "I'm thinking Tony would've taken over, the way he was going," AndyDouglas said. "He was yelling at the refs and everything. A coupleof times, it took Aaron and Alex all they could do to calm himdown." Besides Andy Douglas, only Alex had previously played in theClassic. He was held scoreless in the 2002 game. "He had a chance to score during practice earlier this week," AndyDouglas said. "He was scrimmaging with the players and had awide-open layup but missed it. That was his last chance to score." All-star weekend: Up until a couple of weeks ago, Harley Stone wasn't sure about hisavailability for the Classic. A standout baseball player at Scotland County, Stone was selectedto play in the Missouri Baseball Coaches Association all-star gamein St. Joseph. It was scheduled for Saturday before it was changedto today. Stone left for St. Joseph immediately after the Classic. He expects to pitch in the game and maybe see some action atshortstop. "It's been a good weekend," said Stone, who will play wide receiverfor the Northwest Missouri State football team in the fall. "Itwould've been disappointing if I hadn't been able to play in both." Sitting it out: The Illinois boys team had only eight available players. IlliniWest's Evan McGaughey (knee) and Griggsville-Perry's Clayton Myers(broken finger) were not available. Myers suffered his injury near the end of baseball season.McGaughey was injured during practice last week. — sports@whig.com/221-3365.
