Whether it be a cold winter day, or just for a romantic evening at home, there is nothing better than sitting in front of a fireplace. There are three main types, and it is important to choose the one that works best for your home, and there are both pros and cons of each. The most common type of fireplace is one that is mounted to the wall and is part of the construction of the home. It is typically in a living room, and often in a family room or bedroom, and includes a mantel and floor plate. There will also be a chimney that sends the smoke out of the room. It can burn wood, gas, or electricity, if you have a newer home. When you are designing your own home, it is a good idea to go with a brand that has a good reputation, as it would be disappointing to have to remove it after installation because it was of bad quality. Another type of fireplace that is common is one that stands on its own, often referred to as a wood stove. This one does not require you to modify your home, and is usually installed on a stone piece. These work similarly to those that are mounted to the wall as the fire burns in the base and smoke escapes through a pipe that is connected to the home's chimney. Just as those that are wall mounted, these also use wood, gas, or electric, and are great if you don't want to invest in a complete remodel. Your local store often has examples of the different types so that you can look around and discuss them with the dealer. Finally, there are portable fireplaces. These are similar to free-standing ones in many ways, but are not attached to a chimney, so that they can be moved from room to room. Most of them are electric, but can be made to operate on wood or gas. These are great options if you just want a winter warm up, do not have an open wall for a permanent fixture, or don't want to do a complete remodel. There are both advantages and disadvantages of each type of fireplace. Many people enjoy the smell of wood burning, but those need to be cleaned regularly so that you can prevent smoke coming indoors and chimney fires. A gas burning stove is easier to operate and maintain, but needs to have a chimney so that it can be vented properly, unless they are vent-free, which do burn hotter. Electric types do not have the wood smell, but they are the safest, as they do not have any real flame, just heat, so they don't need any venting, and they can be used anywhere. Before you make your purchase, you need to decide what you need. You also need to decide if the pros outweigh the cons when you are making your decision as you do your own research. Stay warm!
