Parts cleaning in this article refers to the cleaning and/or degreasing of metal components and surfaces. Whether it’s an old coin or a car part, there are a variety of parts cleaning technologies and methods available to start you down the path of restoring that shine or finish you are looking for. Good old-fashioned soap and water can actually work wonders. One thing to note is that hot water by itself will remove grease and dirt better than any parts cleaning solution combined with cold water; the hotter the better in this case. Paired with some good detergent, this method can yield great results without the need to use any toxic or harmful products. An added benefit of cleaning this way is that you can use plastic-based brushes or scrubs without having to fear them disintegrating. If you find yourself up against some resilient grime, you may want to consider a solvent-based parts cleaning solution. Be careful, however, because many of these substances will dissolve rubber and plastic, and even soak into your skin. You will want to make sure you are using chemical-resistant gloves when working with these solutions. Having exhausted the aforementioned techniques, if you are left with some paint or other coating material that is still adhered to the surface of your component, media blasting may be your answer. As far as parts cleaning equipment goes, a media blasting cabinet is relatively affordable. Using low pressure air from a compressor, you can place your part into the blast cabinet and use the blast gun to literally blast away paint, rust, and other unwanted materials. Another technological parts cleaning solution is electrolysis. This involves dissolving baking soda in water and then suspending your component in the water and running an electrical current through it. This is an excellent method for rust removal and it will dissolve the rust right off the part, leaving everything underneath untouched.
