When someone asks where you have magnets at home, you might answer with "on the refrigerator." However, it's likely that there are more than just decorative magnets scattered throughout your house. In fact, the uses of magnets is a seemingly endless list. From appliances to home decor, your home is chockfull of magnets that you can't see, but use regularly. The kitchen alone is hiding a wealth of home magnets. Of course the fridge wears magnets on the outside, but some brands uses them inside of the appliance's doors to keep them shut as tightly as possible. This keeps cold air in, an especially important feature in chilly freezers. Smaller kitchen appliances and tools also rely on magnets to make your work in the kitchen easier. For one, the electric can opener holds onto the top of cans with a powerful magnet. The microwave typically uses two magnets that point electrons toward the food for heating. Some sinks are even outfitted with magnets, a feature that reduces the amount of limescale build-up. Some homeowners even add their own magnetic tools into the mix. One way to organize knives or other metal kitchen tools, for example, is by hanging a strong magnetic strip on the wall. They then easily latch on and off and make it easier for you to grab the right knife or spoon in the midst of cooking. There are magnets at home outside of the kitchen, though. If you have an older television or computer, it's likely that a magnet is used in the screen to sharpen images. This technology has been phased out, though, as bringing a strong magnet in close proximity to these items could potentially ruin them. Laptops, however, often have magnets in their hard drives and where the lid snaps so that the computer can tell when it's open or closed. Vacuums use magnets so that they have the strongest suction possible. Even duvet covers rely on magnets to keep themselves closed. This list, of course, is not exhaustive: there are countless uses of magnets in your home. At the end of the day, though, you probably won't see them at work. Information provided courtesy of
