Earlier this year, Ling Yifan, a young cartoonist, was told thather grandfather, an 86-year-old engineer, had been diagnosed withterminal cancer. After finishing his portrait at her grandpa'srequest, the devastated girl posted it on her microblog on May 11,asking people to print it out and take a photo alongside itwherever they are. "I want him to 'see' more of the world in hislast days", Ling wrote on her microblog, "it's like he'll be goingthere by himself." This microblog has aroused the attention of many netizens. Withinjust three days, tens of thousands of photos had been sent back andthe microblog had been forwarded more than eighty thousand times asof May 14. From the Thames in London to the Antarctic Peninsula,people have been sending back their best wishes and photos with theportrait. Ling's microblog has struck a responsive chord in the hearts oftens of thousands of netizens. "It made me think of my owngrandfather," one netizen said; "he left me in 1994." Greatlytouched by Ling's microblog, another netizen in Tianjin even made afive-minute video entitled "Taking grandpa to see the world". Ling showed the photos to her grandfather when she went to visithim in hospital on May 13. Due to his health condition, Ling'sgrandfather was unable to finish looking through all of them.However, he asked his granddaughter to send his sincere thanks toall those netizens who sent their wishes. Ling told reporters thatshe was inspired by the whole process and that she would continueto pass on the power of love to her readers in her future works ofart.
