How scary does the very mention of Indian TV serials sound today! Blame the queen of television Ekta Kapoor for the overdose of rebirths, extra marital affairs, dramas, stylish vamps, property betrayal, rift between the huge families living in super deluxe homes and all that melodramatic cliche, followed by the echoes. However, the history of television cannot be over looked with that glorious past that it has lived through. Here's a quick run through of trends of Hindi TV serials. While Chitrahar and weekend movie screenings were the in thing in the 60's and 70's it was the mythological base of the Ramayan and Mahabharat that worked wonders. The most popularly heard tales are of people worshipping the TV for Ram and avoiding any guests at the time when the shows were aired. What followed was the trend of fresh and light humour, when shows like Neev, Buniyad, Hum Log were being telecasted. Historical shows remained to be a popular trend even later with shows like 'The Sword of Tipu Sultan' and '1857 Kranti' started gaining popularity. History has been keenly explored in Hindi TV serials on the lives of Jhansi Ki Rani, Prithviraj Chouhan, and Emperor Akbar. Similar being the case with mythological shows which continued with Shree Krishna and Jai Hanuman. Many versions of Ramayan and Mahabharat have been explored till date, each with its own deserving share of success. Shows like Mahadev, Jai Ganesh and Buddha are still finding their audience on Indian TV. Shows like Saans, Parampara, Alpviram, Rishtey were popular with their treatment towards relationships, which got a new twist with the era of K shows. While horror never gained much success beyond X zone, fear files and Aahat; the most inefficiently explored area. CID continues to be the longest running show that too with consistent performance on Sony Entertainment television for the last 13 years. Sony had also explored and gained success with shows like Adaalat, Crime Patrol in the same genre. Finally coming to the Ekta Kapoor zone where not much needs to be described as most of us have explored it at some point on Indian TV, but no one till date has explored vamps and sets in such style. The recent trend of rural and realistic shows helped in bringing forth in the race an entire channel - Colors TV with BalikaVadhu and Uttran. The last but un-miss able trend that still continues to stir the ocean is the reality show section. And it only gets bigger and better with more celebrities joining the band wagon, and their journey from television to online, for promotional purposes only excite more viewers.
