St. Helena will challenge China for the Guinness World Record forthe longest relay wine toast this summer. The St. Helena Kiwanis Club, in partnership with Appellation St.Helena, Cheers! St. Helena and the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce,have announced The Napa Valley Wine Wave, which takes placeSunday, Oct. 7, at Charles Krug Winery. Wine lovers are invited to participate and surpass the currentworld record of 321 participants that was set in November 2011 byShenzhen Sinoauwine in Guangzhou, China. A sequential wine toast is a relay toast where participants clinkglasses in order, from start to finish, rather than the more commontoast where everyone clinks glasses simultaneously, said AnnMarie Conover, chairman of the board of the St. Helena Chamber ofCommerce. St. Helena Mayor Del Britton added, It s not every day that acommunity can set a world record, and this record is something wewill tell our grandchildren about. Britton is a longtime memberof the St. Helena Kiwanis Club. To complete the Guinness World Record, the relay toast must be donein sequential order, without interruption or mistakes. Uponcompletion, an official Guinness adjudicator will announce whetherthe new world record has been set. Participants will receive aworld record medallion and other items to commemorate the event. Featured that day will be live music, food, wine tasting, andmerriment for all to enjoy. Proceeds raised from the event will gotoward scholarships in the agriculture, viticulture, winemaking,business and hospitality industries. The St. Helena Kiwanis Club will host Pre-Clink practices atCheers! St. Helena, the town social gathering that takes place thefirst Friday of every month, May through October. The art of the clink is not as easy as it looks, especially whenyou expect to have hundreds of people involved, said Lance Orton,director of Cheers! St. Helena. The Pre-Clink will give you achance to fine-tune your toasting talents and get you ready for thebig event. The Napa Valley Wine Wave is open to participants and spectatorsfor a tax-deductible entrance fee. A limited number of participanttickets are available for $100. Those who want to be spectators maypurchase tickets for $35.
