If you have ever tried to fit any form of hardwood door in your house then you will know what an extremely difficult a job it can be. For a start with a hardwood door you will need extremely sharp and tough drill bits for drilling holes for the screws for the hinges, locks and door handles. You will also find that due to the hard nature of the wood that chiselling out rebates for hinges and door locks can be a particularly long and arduous task. Indeed it can be so much so that having fitted one hardwood door you might never want to fit another one again. It is for this ease of fitting that many people who want to use their own Do It Yourself (DIY) skills to fit their doors at home, opt to fit pine doors. Whilst being made of solid the doors are much, much lighter than hardwood doors are, and with use of wedges they can easily be lifted it into place and fitted by one person working alone. They will also accept a wide variety of finishes including paint, varnish, wax and wood stain. Indeed pine reacts very well to wood stain and the pine wood will immediately draw in the colour of whatever wood stain you choose to coat it in. Likewise one alternative finish for pine is the use of wax. When you first hear this it may seem odd but pine really does look good with wax applied. It will not look overly shiny or glossy when applied, but over a period of time and when reapplied annually it will give the door some age and patina to it. Also over a period of time the nicks and dings that it will pick up will give the door a slightly distressed look, but all of this adds to the character of the door in good way. Wax is easy to apply to pine wood doors with a wax stick. The other options are paint or varnish both of which any pine door will readily accept and require the minimal amount of coats to finish, as they really are a very easy door to work with which is why so many people choose to fit pine wood doors. Pine doors really are very easy to fit and can be sanded down to a beautiful smooth finish very easily with a minimum of effort or next to none if you opt to use an electric sander.
