When people move into a retirement facility it’s usually because they want to live in a community with people their own age and with similar interests. They also don’t want to have the burden of taking care of a house and the property. And even perhaps, they would like everything to be within walking distance. Reasons for choosing one facility over another The retirement community they choose will be one where they feel comfortable. It may be a matter of location from their former residence, or they may like the programs offered, the staff, or the other resident’s current living there can often play a part in the decision to live there. One of the goals of a retirement community is to maintain a safe living environment for the residents and employees of the facility. If a fire should break out, for example, the residents would have to be evacuated safely, and if the property sustained significant damage, Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) property insurance would be required to pay to repair the building(s). Other damages could occur, for example, from water sprinklers set off by a blaze, resulting in flooding, damage to furniture, equipment, or many other valuable items on the property. While fires are a preventable hazard, there is the danger of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or earthquake, which could wreak havoc and cause significant damage to the structure as well. Safety and insurance go hand in hand If the building were uninhabitable for any length of time, the residents would have to be given some type of temporary living quarters and this becomes yet another added expense for the facility’s owners. Considering the various exposures that may exist, depending on the geographical location of the facility, having both, a good safety program and adequate CCRC property insurance coverage can go a long way towards preventing some problems that could occur, and resolving any issues once any immediate danger has passed. With so many options available for senior living, it is important for the owners to stand out and have something valuable to offer as a way of enticing families to choose their residence over other extended living facilities available. With so much competition, shouldn’t safety be the number one concern? If a retirement community has a good track record, in terms of having a low number of incidents that directly affects its residents in a negative way, then they will probably be seen in a more favorable light.
