Mathematics is the branch of science that requires sense, logic, and reasoning and uses the tools of arithmetic and computations to study quantity, shapes, relations, structures, change and space. Mathematicians use axioms and definitions to create an abstraction of a real life situation and change it into formulas. This way mathematics creates a model that can be applied to applications in science and technology. As a matter of fact, some models can be used to solve problems in social sciences, economics and art. The development of different sciences relied heavily on mathematics. This is especially the case for engineering, science, and technology. These fields are completely based on mathematics. Experimentation alone is never enough to produce theories. This really answers the debate on whether mathematics objects exist. Some argue that it is an abstraction and completely detached from the real world. However; this is far from being true. This is because it was created with the incentive to solve some real life situation. The data of the real life seen is extracted and converted to symbolic axioms and a relation is found and finally a model is created. Sometimes creating the suitable model for the seen requires the creation of a new field of mathematics. The development of mathematics and the development of science and technology went hand in hand through the centuries from the ancient Egyptian times till our present day. It all starts with a practical problem that is facing social development. Those who attempt to tackle the problem use the simple rules, logic and common sense and build on the previous mathematical base to produce a new branch of mathematical science that solves the problem in an elegant abstract way. In the ancient past when there was a need to do constructions and build temples and make artistic decorations on these temples the branch of geometry was created. Geometry solves the problem of dimensions and shapes that facilitates the work of construction and artwork creations. At the time when trade was potent algebra was created to solve the problem of finding unknowns and plotting graphs. Also algebra was further developed to represent relations between physical entities. Some physical entities were found to be dynamic and were changing relative to other entities. Algebra was surely not enough to model this behavior. This lead to the creation of a new branch called calculus. One might argue that mathematics produces certain or exact results but in real life problems nothing is certain. The answer to this is that the mathematical model is an approximation using ideal cases that produce tolerable error. The beauty of mathematics is that it can estimate the error with reasonable accuracy. The field of statistics was created to study the behavior of experimental data. It can lead the scientist or economist to come to new conclusions about the real life problem that were not apparent from the experiment itself. In the modern era the field of operations research was created to model problems in a way that automates decision making. It can even convert the behavior of people into a model that can be used in many applications like marketing and sales. Today we are privileged that we can use the many available innovative software calculators to model real life situations in all these areas and come to conclusions or be able to take decisions based on the output of these calculators.
