Mathematics is the branch of science that requires sense, logic, and reasoning and uses the tools of arithmetic and computations to study quantity, shapes, relations, structures, change and space. Mathematicians use axioms and definitions to create an abstraction of a real life situation and change it into formulas. Algebra was surely not enough to model this behavior. This lead to the creation of a new branch called calculus. One might argue that mathematics produces certain or exact results but in real life problems nothing is certain. The answer to this is that the mathematical model is an approximation using ideal cases that produce tolerable error. The beauty of mathematics is that it can estimate the error with reasonable accuracy. The field of statistics was created to study the behavior of experimental data. It can lead the scientist or economist to come to new conclusions about the real life problem that were not apparent from the experiment itself. In the modern era the field of operations research was created to model problems in a way that automates decision making. It can even convert the behavior of people into a model that can be used in many applications like marketing and sales.
