Some women inventors have found inspiration in their everyday lives, trying to improve it or to satisfy common woes that affected many people. The Mechanical Dishwasher Every time you turn on your dishwasher and forget about doing the dishes after dinner, thank a woman. In fact, you should thank Josephine Garis Cochran, who developed the first mechanical dishwasher in 1886. She is one of the many women inventors who was inspired by her daily routine to come up with something new and revolutionary. Josephine Garis Cochran loved offering dinner parties but then complaint about how many of her dishes got chipped by her servants as they washed them. Tired of her chipped dishes she developed a machine to wash them mechanically. Soon, her friends ordered new machines for them as well and she got orders from restaurants and hotels. Miss Garis Cochran received the highest award during the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Marie Curie: One Of The First Women Inventors The famous Polish scientist Marie Curie is probably amongst the most renowned women inventors. She is mainly known for having discovered Polonium and Radium, two important chemical elements, and for having also discovered that tumors could be kill with x-rays. Women should be proud of inventors such as Marie Curie as she was the first person to receive the Nobel Prize twice. Her discovery of Radium and how to process it meant a significant advancement for medical applications. Margaret Knight: The Mother Of The Grocery Bag Margaret Knight is one of those women inventors whose wit has had an impact in our society that we can still appreciate every time we go grocery shopping. In fact, she invented the square paper bag we are so acquainted with. Margaret was an employee in a factory that produced paper bags. But at that time the bags seemed large envelopes and they were not totally practical. By 1870, she thought of a way of making the machine to automatically fold the paper and glue it to create a square. Inventors, whether they are men or women, should be our source of inspiration. Their tenacity should encourage us all to fight for our dreams and make our best effort to achieve them. We should definitely be proud of them, especially of female inventors, because of their tenacity to come up with something new.
