LYNCHBURG -- A former Papa John's employee was sentenced in March for setting upa 2010 robbery of her own store, and now her boyfriend and twoothers face felony charges related to the same incident. Lianna N. Parker, 21, of Hampton, plotted with her boyfriend, ShawnM. Demers, and two men, William A. Bowie and Brandon A. Carey, torob the Old Forest Road Papa John"s Pizza store on Dec. 27,2010, Detective R. G. Miller of the Lynchburg Police Departmentsaid Monday. Demers, 20, of Drakes Branch, Va.; Bowie, 22, of Drakes Branch,Va.; and Carey, 22, of Green Bay, Va., all face charges of robberyand use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Demers, who is already in prison on cocaine distributionconvictions, is set for a jury trial July 11, according to onlinecourt records. Carey is set for a trial Aug. 2 while Bowie's trial is set for Aug.14. In March, Parker was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison oncharges of embezzlement of $1,100 and filing a false police reportfor her role in the scheme. Miller said Parker and Demers, who are white, chose to workspecifically with black men to try to throw attention offthemselves. They wanted to take advantage of reports of a Link Road homeinvasion robbery earlier that month involving a black male suspectand were planning another robbery for New Year's Eve, hoping thatpolice and the public would believe the same man was responsible,Miller said. On the night of the Papa John's robbery, Parker faked pizzadelivery orders to get the drivers out of the store, Miller said. Bowie, Carey and Demers drove up to the store, Miller said, andBowie walked inside shortly before 11 p.m. with a handgun, demandedmoney and fled. The store manager was there but was not involved in planning thescheme, Miller said. Parker didn't confess to the robbery being staged until February --more than a year later, a prosecutor said at her March 23sentencing. At that sentencing, Lynchburg Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney ChuckFelmlee said several witnesses came forward to tell authoritiesthat Parker and Demers had set up the robbery. At the time, Felmlee said Parker was still refusing to implicateDemers or name the armed man who actually carried out the robbery. But police knew more people than Parker and Demers were involvedbecause the store manager had been certain the armed man was black,Miller said Monday. The investigation took more than a year largely because of the timeinvolved in investigative work such as obtaining court orders andsifting through phone records, among other things, Miller said. But Miller said Lynchburg police felt the case was importantbecause of the atmosphere of anxiety that the December 2010robberies created in the Old Forest Road and Link Road area. "It was just something we felt we needed to pursue and keeppersevering at," Miller said.
