Asia World Capital Group: As skepticism over a consortium’s $9-a-share bid mounts, BlackBerry hedges its bets by courting bids from tech giants. Asia World Capital Group: It has emerged that besieged smartphone manufacturer, BlackBerry, is in consultation with several of the biggest names in global technology with a view to selling off its business piecemeal or in its entirety. The news comes despite the company’s preliminary acceptance of an offer of $9-a-share from a consortium led by BlackBerry’s biggest shareholder, Fairfax Financial Holdings. According to reports, BlackBerry is soliciting “preliminary expressions of interest” from what reads like a ‘Who’s who’ of global technology including Cisco Systems, Intel, SAP, Google, Samsung and LG. According to analysts, there are several key BlackBerry assets that could be of interest to the tech companies including the highly-secure messaging system that, at one time, made the company’s devices popular within the enterprise sector. An Asia World Capital Group tech sector analyst said, “BlackBerry’s management must know something the rest of the market doesn’t just yet if it’s hedging its bets by inviting offers from other parties. We’re very optimistic that the company’s patents and considerable cash pile will be of interest to one of those potential suitors and the likelihood is that they’ll be able to secure the deal using cash rather than having to borrow like the consortium led by Fairfax.” BlackBerry delivered worse-than-expected Q3 results recently when it posted a loss of nearly $1 billion from July to September and a 43% drop in revenues on the same period a year earlier. Asia World Capital Group says it does not expect the Fairfax Financial Holdings-led consortium bid to succeed.
