When you work hard for most of the year a holiday isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Sometimes it might be just a weekend or a few days away. Other times you’re able to treat yourself to something a bit more exotic. Either way, your holiday should be a chance to totally get away from your everyday life, an opportunity to try new things and be a bit spontaneous. Of course, giving yourself the freedom to be a bit spontaneous can involve a fair bit of planning. The more far flung and the longer the trip you're planning the more preparation will be involved. .The following list assumes you're going abroad and that you'll be away for at least a week but it can serve as a spring board for even longer trips too. 1. Passports/Visas Don't leave it till the last minute to check them, order them or renew them. It will cost you an arm and a leg to use the express service and there are far more exciting things you can be spending that money on. 2. Health Care Think about this well in advance. If you need any vaccinations they may need to be given more than once and some time before you leave. Make sure you have your European Health Insurance Card for any country where it will give you some emergency health care. Remember that what's covered in different countries varies. This card will not cover the cost of getting you home early for treatment. Depending on your destination and planned activities, you may well need extra private cover. Shop around...There's no point in paying more than you have to but a waste to spend money on cover that won't meet your needs. 4. Looking After Your Home It's sad but true that you need to consider security. Letters that get stuck in the letter box are a dead give away, get your mail held or get a neighbour to collect .Lights on timers can make it look as if there's someone home. Who'll water the houseplants? The benefits of your holiday will be halved if you come back to a house that looks neglected, or worse has been broken into. 5. Arrangements For your Pets Maybe you'll have someone who can look after your dog, cat or goldfish! Kennels or catteries are an option if you don't. An increasingly popular choice is a service such as pet sitting Waterloo. Being looked after in their usual home is much less stressful for your dog or cat, (the goldfish probably doesn't really care!). Using pet sitters also gives you the security of a human in your home whilst you're away. 6. Who to tell at Work Think about this one! There's the security issue again, but also giving people phone numbers for when you're away is almost an invitation for them to contact you. The whole idea is to give yourself a total break and that's hard to achieve if you're getting calls from the office.
