Stumpjumper Lures are different to others – not because they catch more fish as some argue – but because they have exchangeable bibs. Think about this, if you don’t like the depth the lure is swimming or its action, you pull the bib out and exchange it with another, especially if the fish are going for the particular colour. Every Stumpjumper and Aussiejumper lure has a bob fitted plus four extra bibs that enables you to play about with both swimming depth and action. I have been using Stumpjumper lures for years and there are normally a few in my tackle box on any given outing. While they are not a top action saltwater barramundi lure, they do have a place where the barra are deep and hanging up in log falls, rock bars and the like. Trolling or casting a slow action Stumpjumper fitted with a shovel-nosed 1a bib often brings success when other lures fails. The smaller Stumpjumpers are excellent on all tropical freshwater fish – perch, sooty, and coal grunter, jungle perch, barramundi and Saratoga. Stumpjumpers also performs well on most tropical saltwater species. Thought I have not fished for them for decades, from all reports the Stumpjumper is the number one lure for Murray cod and golden perch both in impoundments and n our inland rivers if they haven’t dried up. Stumpjumpers are available in six different sizes ranging from 45mm up to 105 mm with a vast range of different colours to choose from. Combine this with the bib interchange feature and you have a wonderfully versatile lure to suit most conditions and of course they do rattle. The name Stumpjumper is derived from the lure’s ability to climb over underwater obstacles. The lure swims bum up and when the bib touches an underwater object it is a simple matter of dropping the rod tip, which allows the lure to float up and clear the obstacle. It takes practice, but experienced anglers know the difference between a fish bite and bob bump. It’s worth knowing because if you don’t, you are going to strike and set the hook into timber. Aussiejumpers: while the longer and slimmer Aussiejumpers are aimed at the barramundi angler, they rate highly as a top saltwater pelagic lure. Barra lures are an industry of their own and if a lure does not cut it with barra anglers then it won’t sell up north where all the action is. The Aussiejumpers are true barra lures and with the interchangeable bib they are truly an innovation. They range from 100mm to 125mm in length and come in a proven range of eight preferred fish colours to fool the prey and hunter alike. Like the Stumpjumper, they carry 4X strong hardware and in one memorable session in the Blyth River in Arnhem Land Barramundi Nature Lodge – I landed several barra ranging from 78 to 95cm on a Aussiejumper 125mm Goldbait fitted with a BB deep diving bib. The fish were caught while trolling over a rock bar in about five metres of water bit it become deeper as the tide rolled in. it was a matter of jigging the rod tip and hanging on when a fish hit. We also caught fingermark, queenfish, trevally, black jewfish and threadfin salmon. I also used the lures for casting about mangrove log falls, where the barra had taken up positions during the high tide. The fish averaged about 70cm and were strong fighters that proved to entice and even harder to extract from the timber, but both Aussiejumper sizes held their own with the other lures we used. I have also caught mackerel, tuna, and other free roaming pelagic that cruise the water of the Cape York Peninsula on Aussiejumpers. They work just fine on queenfish and of course giant trevally and their close-linked cousins. There is even a luminous model that glows in the dark and it has some success when used at night and in deep water on heavy overcast days.
