Boats were never sailed in a day and hence there were also not built in a day. Building them is a unique way in itself. Creating boats is an art as well as science. All wooden parts are joined together so that a wooden boat may be formed. Waterproof hulls, decks and joints are brought together to create a boat of one’s choice. Wooden boat building requires an understanding of materials, time and patience. Certain methods of building a boat are lapstrake hull, decks, finish cabinetry and strip planking method. Clinker ply is a method of constructing the boat hulls through use of wooden planks in a way in which the edges of the planks overlap. The joint at which the edges overlap is called as the land. This technique is also called as Lapstrake and is the most ancient form of building wooden boats. Lapstrake hull is a construction method that is traditional in making a hull in a boat. A lapstrake is said to be thin and long plank which is bent on the ribs of the hull. A separate lapstrake is then made to overlap with another lapstrake on the edge of the first one. This method helps in creating strong hulls. The finished product is like clapboards on the side of the house. This method is one of the oldest of all boat building methods and was necessary before plywood, sheet goods and fiberglass construction came into existence. Decks in boats are quite an important component because the area below decks is protected from getting wet. They also protect the boat from swamping. With tongue and groove method the construction of deck takes place. Creating seafaring decks is a sailor’s dream that can be achieved when waterproof finish on wood’s top is combined with tongue and groove method. In the aforesaid method, the wood planks are interlocked together so that water impermeability is attained. Boat cabinetry is referred as bright work since it is made of brightly shellacked mahogany. Mahogany work is applied on deck mainly on the cabin sides and on the joints that fall between the hull and the deck. Another technique is the strip planking technique. In this method the boat’s hull is created using wooden strips. The said strips are narrow and since they are narrow they do not require shaping. The edges of the planks are glued together. The glue is mostly epoxy adhesives that keep the hull together. This method is used on canoes and boats. Strip planking consists of many kinds. Ply on frame method is a building wooden boats process that has wooden frames called ribs. There are frame members that are connected to rib slots. The first frame member runs through the center and is known as keelson. Two other members run along the top on each hull sides and are known as sheer clams. Then there are two additional frame members which are attached at the bottom of the hull transitions. This joint is called the chine and the frame member here is called as the chine log. The joints are bolted or glued together. This particular boat building is quite reliable and strong. Because there are many wooden boat building methods available today, it is difficult for an avid sailor to select from the best from them. Here all what is required is experience in sailing and expertise in cracking the best boat for sail. Article source : http://bit.ly/1ankUgv
