A common question wines lovers pose, is what goes into the making of a great wine and what distinguishes a premier wine to other grades. People that are famed for their wine making have stated that grape growing and paying attention to every detail and picking by taste as well as a great palate is the key to good wines. Clearly a good wine begins in the vineyard. To produce good wines, one needs to pay close attention to what takes place in the vineyard and in the cellar. Good wines come from careful picking decisions and keeping the winemaking simple. Many winemakers state that one should let nature produce the wine as opposed to trying to manipulate and shape the process. Viticulturist’s worldwide state that one needs to form a relationship with their vineyard by walking up and down each row daily observing and tasting the grapes. Another common questioned posed is what makes one wine exceptional and another just good. Another aspect of the wine trade that fascinates people is the disparity in prices between premier wines and ordinary wines. It is apparent that grapes of the same variety grown in different locations will determine the difference, even when processed the same way. For instance the Birch family wines Margret River which is one of the largest families owned and operated wineries that focus on the quality performance of their vines, which are grown in the best possible organic soils. The Birch wines have earned a reputation both nationally and internationally for elegant balanced wines. Wines that fetch very high prices are defined by vineyards that have a well known reputation and track record of producing premier wines, that is to say where the grape variety and environment are matched to perfection. In some instance irrespective of the quality of the wine in the bottle, a well known label will determine the price. In the world of wine, reputation matters a great deal, as most people’s sense of smell and taste can be easily fooled. There are varying factors that create price differences between a good wine and a standard wine of which include microclimate and soil properties as well as water availability and drainage and in some instance chemical differences. However, premier wines do deserve their reputation and there are wines such as the Birch wines that merit the reverence awarded to them. There are wines that have reputations that exceed the contents of the bottle which is why the consumer ends up paying extra. In order for Viticulturist’s to produce top quality wines like Burch Family Wines Margret River, they have to extend their budgets in pursuit of quality.
