A few months ago, I read a newspaper article about some impressiveoutdoor vertical gardens installed in Mexico City. Vertical gardensor vertical walls are a way to maximize gardening space in areaswhere horizontal gardening is impractical or impossible. On amassive scale, these landscapes can cool ambient temperatures, addhumidity and improve air quality by filtering pollutants. Probably Austin's most visible vertical garden is at Whole FoodsMarket downtown, towering above the escalators. While beautiful, this planting is indoors and must involve a complicated structureand irrigation system. I wondered what I might be able to create inmy own backyard that would be low-cost, attractive and functional. A little web research yielded plenty of helpful information to getme started. To counter the blazing Texas heat and lack of rain— which appear to be here to stay — I chose a mostlyshady brick wall on my back patio. Besides saving space, vertical gardening has a number of benefits.Pill bugs, snails and slugs are less likely to munch on low-growingedible crops such as strawberries and lettuce. And, I won't have tofence off the area from my backyard hens. In other cases, verticalgardening keeps plants safe from critters who like to browse ontasty plants or inadvertently trample them, such as rabbits, deer, dogs and cats. It's also a great way to upcycle used materials. Some of myfavorite examples that I found online include used rain gutters, wooden pallets, shoe organizers and empty plastic soda bottles. Ibrowsed the Habitat for Humanity ReStore for inspiration andmaterials. On this particular day, though, I got some ideas but nomaterials. But, if vertical wooden pallet gardens is your schtick, the ReStore is the place to go. The Internet has plenty of DIYvideos on how to transform the pallets to attractive and functionalvertical landscapes. My husband and I headed to the hardware store. We ended up with a10 foot length of robin's egg blue, 4-inch diameter PVC pipe; whitecaps for each end; some PVC cement; steel wire for hanging; andvarious hardware to make it all work. I was torn between going for an edgy urban look by plantingsucculents, or for a practical urban farming approach by fillingthe vertical planters with edible herbs. Practicality won out. Incooler weather, I can fill the spaces with lettuce, spinach orchard. Or maybe even radishes and Thumbelina carrots. We cut a hole in the side of each PVC pipe to turn it into aplanter and filled each with potting soil mixed with a good qualityorganic fertilizer. A simple drip irrigation system would allow formore even watering. But, I decided to go low-tech and hand water.Besides, that gives me an excuse to check on my new vertical gardenevery morning and evening. With neighborhood bulk collection coming up next week, I think I'llkeep my eye out for more potential containers to fill out abackyard vertical garden. You never know.
