GREEN REVOLUTION Green Revolution refers to an increase in the agricultural production worldwide, mainly in the developing countries, with the introduction of high-yielding seeds, chemical fertilizers and better irrigational facilities. Green Revolution began in the 1940s in Mexico. Norman Borlaug, also known as the Father of Green Revolution developed new, disease-free and high yielding varieties (HYV) of wheat and other cereal grains. He also introduced modern management techniques like hybrid seeds, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers to bring about an expansion in irrigational infrastructure. BEGINNING OF THE GREEN REVOLUTION: Beginning in the 1940s, Green Revolution because of its success in Mexico slowly spread in the whole world by late 1960s. Mexico, which was importing almost half of wheat supply prior to green revolution, was able to produce more than that was needed and became an exporter of wheat by the 1960s after using new varieties and new agricultural technologies introduced by Borlaug. Similar was the case with the United States. GREEN REVOLUTION IN INDIA In 1961, when India suffered a mass famine, the agricultural minister M.S. Swaminathan invited Borlaug, who brought green revolution to India by improving agricultural produce and making India self sufficient in food grains and become one of world’s major rice exporters. ADVANTAGES OF GREEN REVOLUTION: TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS: • Latest and adequate irrigation methods • Improvised varieties of crops and seeds(which are high yielding and resistant to diseases) • Better scientific methods as per farmers needs • Use of pesticides and synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. INCREASE IN PRODUCTION: • Significant increase in agricultural production (world’s overall production increased by over 250%) • Yields of rice, wheat and maize steadily rising • Economic development of many developing economies • Better use of land • Farmers being benefitted economically and productively NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF GREEN REVOLUTION: • Due to consumption of oil and gas in using modern techniques for raising agriculture production, a fall in global oil supply could be observed, which in the long run can have many setbacks. • Due to large scale use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, land degradation and infertility occurred which affected the quality and yield of crops. • Increase in weeds • Rise in pest infestation due to the use of pesticides • Bio Diversity being affected and harmed due to the use of chemicals in pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers • Contamination of ground water affecting human health in the long run. Despite some setbacks, Green revolution has been successful in making many developing economies self sufficient in agricultural production and also helped in fighting malnutrition and starvation.
