It is widely known that Chinese is a difficult language to master especially by westerners. Besides the fact that the writing system is completely different, there are many idioms and phrases in Chinese you cannot possibly understand unless you have at least a relative knowledge with regards to the culture and mentality of this country. This is why people often choose to appeal to a specialized translation company when they are faced with a text in Chinese they cannot possibly make sense of. With the advent of the Internet and the apparition of so many online applications, some people are tempted to use translation machines instead of hiring specialists handle the task. If a professional Chinese translator may have difficulties when translating from and into Chinese, relying on an online translation machine is definitely a bad idea. The automatic responses a machine is programmed to give are simply too limited for the variations a language can have. Computers cannot possibly handle well something so alive and constantly changing as is the Chinese language, as is any other language as a matter of fact. When doing a Chinese translation you rely on your imagination to guess the intention behind the speaker’s enumeration of words, something a machine is not capable of doing. Whether we talk about the limitations imposed by the fact that a machine can only give automatic answers or the fact that a phrase must already be introduced in the system to be recognized, a translation machine can obviously do only a poor job when it comes to translations. If you only need to understand the general direction of a text, online translators are probably up to the task, but everything more than that should be left in the hands of a professional Chinese translator. When speaking and writing, people choose their words in accordance with the intention of the exchange. If you wish the things you say to sound as a threat you choose harsher words that have a relatively bad connotation. When you want your threat to sound as a joke you purposefully add a word that implies that, but a machine is incapable of reading these signs and will translate the words without nuances. Because of this lack of improvisation skills, the meaning and purpose of the text are completely lost. You can verify for yourself whether a translation machine has what it takes to make a suitable translation. There is a simple test that can show the limitations the online translators have. You only need to translate a text from your language in Chinese with the help of a translation machine and use the same application to make a reverse translation. The resulted translation and the Chinese translation will look nothing like the original text you introduced. This test can give people an idea as to why relying on an experienced translator is always desirable to using programs when it comes to such delicate operations. Regardless of how simple or complicated a language seems, the results when we try to translate with an online application will always be the same: terrible.
