05/22/12 -- Isabel Healthcare announced today the mobile application aka "App" launch of itspowerful web-based Isabel diagnosis checklist system. The Isabel App enables physicians, nurse practitioners and other clinicians usingiPhone, iPad or iPod touch mobile devices to determine diagnosesand treat patients faster at the point of care. The Isabel apprecently made Apple's App Store's (iTunes) list of top grossingapps in the Medical category. "Our first-ever mobile app is an exciting development in the12-year evolution of Isabel, and it was created in response tooverwhelming physician and market demand for even easier access toour diagnosis tool," said Don Bauman, Isabel Healthcare CEO."Subscribers can now consult the app while on rounds at the bedsideor at any location when needing to solve diagnostic challenges.Having Isabel available anytime and anywhere makes it practical forphysicians to instantly check their patients' diagnoses andtherefore reduce the risk of missing an important diagnosis." The first release of the Isabel App is available for download fromiTunes Apple's App Store and offers three purchase levels --weekly, monthly and annual -- to accommodate various user cases. The weekly subscription is $2.99 in order to make it viable for theoccasional user. Features include: a robust database of more than6,000 pediatric and adult diseases, 'Don't miss' diagnosis alertsfor physicians, links to a customizable list of well-known mobileweb reference resources to rapidly identify and determinediagnosis, and the ability to share results with colleagues orinclude them in medical notes. In 2011, Paul Manicone, M.D., associate chief, HospitalistDivision, Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and assistant professor of pediatrics, GeorgeWashington University School of Medicine, spearheaded the effort tointegrate the tool into clinical workflows of select residents andfaculty researchers for eventual widespread use. Dr. Manicone works in a tertiary care referral center where manypatients (from infants to young adults) have medically complexconditions or are referred by other providers because they aredifficult to diagnose. "My job as a pediatric hospitalist is tofield cases with diagnostic uncertainty, so for me Isabel wasattractive early on," he said. Now with the Isabel app on his iPhone, Dr. Manicone easily opens itduring rounds or at home. "The app has made Isabel so much moreaccessible because it's literally in my pocket. The more we canintegrate technology into our workflow, the better the efficiencyof healthcare. Isabel is a perfect example of that." Dr. Manicone noted the app helped him and other cliniciansdiagnosis central nervous system tuberculosis, a relatively rarecontagious bacterial infection, in a teenager returning from India."We entered the symptoms and when TB came to the top of thechecklist, we were surprised, but it made us proceed with thework-up and mindset to determine the type of brain infection thatshe could have. Ultimately the tuberculosis diagnosis was confirmedand we were able to get her therapy started right away," he said. Another experienced Isabel user is Napoleon Knight, M.D., medicaldirector of hospital medicine and associate medical director ofquality at Carle Foundation Hospital and Physician Group in Urbana, Ill. The physician accesses the Isabel app on his iPadwhen seeing patients in the hospital emergency department. "I have used the computer version of Isabel and have always foundit incredibly helpful. This app makes using Isabel on my iPad thatmuch more convenient and easier to use and a more valuable productfor me because I want that knowledge at my fingertips whilestanding in the patient's room," said Dr. Knight. "The app'schecklist will make you smarter in thinking of diagnoses that youmight not have thought about otherwise. Medical professionals willfind great value in that." The launch of the Isabel App carries personal significance forIsabel Healthcare founder Jason Maude in light of the widelyreported recent case involving Aimee Copeland in Snellville, Ga . In July 1999 Maude suffered a similar nightmare when his then3-year-old daughter Isabel was nearly fatally misdiagnosed by herlocal hospital. Like Aimee's case, clinicians missed correctlydiagnosing necrostizing fasciitis, a flesh eating disease, forcingIsabel to spend three weeks in intensive care fighting for herlife. He turned his personal near tragedy into a new life missionby creating Isabel Healthcare to provide a practical tool to helpclinicians worldwide do the best job possible diagnosing patientsright the first time so they receive the proper treatmentimmediately. "We express our deepest sympathies for Aimee and empathize with herfamily. Their ordeal may have been prevented had their physiciansused modern online diagnosis checklist tools," said Maude. "Itsaddens me terribly each time I hear of a case like Aimee's thatmay have been prevented, and I wonder how many more patients willbe misdiagnosed and suffer before healthcare institutions equiptheir clinicians with diagnosis checklist tools that are nowreadily available and extensively validated. This case, coupledwith the many others that have been reported recently, illustrateperfectly why the use of these tools should become standardpractice." Continuing, Maude said, "Research has shown that approximately 15percent of all diagnoses are wrong. A recent survey of over 6,000 doctors showed that 47 percent of cliniciansencounter cases of diagnostic error at least monthly and 96 percentof them believe that they are preventable."
