Making a mosaic tile pattern can be a fantastic way of decorating both floors and walls. Mosaics were very common with the Romans, but that doesn't mean that using them has to be old fashioned. Actually by making mosaic tile patterns you can quickly and easily breathe extra life into any room. With the right tools and materials available you will be able to mix and match different sizes of mosaic tiles to create stunning designs. Take your time planning your design and you really shouldn't have a problem. Step 1 - Planning The very first thing that you need to do is spend time planning your design. This will not only help to create a beautiful flooring design, but it will also make it possible to mix various different mosaic tiles together. Planning your design is actually very easy, start by measuring the size of the room and marking it out on a piece of paper. Draw the room diagram to scale so that you can design your mosaic flooring. You can also use coloring pencils to see how the finished design will actually look. Alternatively you can design the mosaic tile designs by using tools on the Internet or software packages. Visit a mosaic flooring website to learn about popular design tips. Step 2 - Buying Mosaic Tiles Once you've designed your mosaic pattern you will then need to buy the mosaic tiles. You will be able to buy mosaic small tiles, or alternatively break up your own tiles into smaller pieces to be used in mosaic designs. The beauty about mosaics is that you can use all sorts of different sizes and designs of tiles with one another. Step 3 - Preparing the Floor Before you can fix the mosaics in place you will need to remove the existing floor covering and clean the floor of any adhesive. Use a scraper to clean the floor. If there are any high spots in the floor then use a sander to grind them down. Step 4 - Fixing the Mosaic Tiles Spread adhesive over a small section of floor and start assembling your mosaic design. If you have a problem and accidentally put one of the tiles in the wrong place then simply pull it off before the adhesive dries. Press the tiles into the adhesive and try to keep the spaces between tiles as uniform as possible. If there is any excess adhesive on the face of the tiles then this needs to be cleaned up by using a damp sponge. Step 5 - Grouting the Tiles The gaps in between the tiles need to be filled by using grout. Choose the color of grout to match the design of your mosaic and press it into all of the gaps. Use a plastic scraper to remove any excess grout. If the grout starts to dry out too quickly then use a damp sponge to clean it off. Mosaics are very versatile and can be used to produce all sorts of different designs.
