Before you purchase cots for your baby, always make sure it meets the quality standards. Even though second hand cots may be a cheaper option, there are some dangers associated with purchasing second hand cots. This is because they may have some loose and wobbly parts that may make the cot weak, there could be unwanted gaps that a baby can get caught in, sides may be too low where a baby can climb and fall over and old paint that could be poisonous if the baby puts it in his/her mouth. Hence it is always better to buy a new cot to prevent your baby’s life from the risk of cot death. Furthermore, use firm and fitting mattress that comes with new cots. Additional padding of your own is not required because gaps can be created between the mattress and the cot wall and the baby can get trapped in between. The safest location to place your baby’s cot is in the same room that the parents sleep in. Babies who sleep on their own in a separate room are more prone to cot deaths. Furthermore, be having your baby’s cosatto in your own room, you can keep an eye on it at all times. Also, avoid placing your baby in the same bed as you sleep in as this can be dangerous in terms of your baby rolling under you and suffocating or falling down while you are fast asleep. Experts recommend breast feeding your baby for as long as possible to reduce the risk of cot deaths. Some mothers prefer having the baby on their bed while breast feeding. This is safe as long as you put the baby back in his/her own cot before you fall asleep and once the baby is asleep. Doctors also advice mothers to give their babies a soother while they are asleep so that they sleep more soundly, hence reducing the risk of cot death. However, wait until the baby is at least a month old before you begin a soother in order to allow the baby to get used to breastfeeding first. Don’t force a soother in your baby’s mouth and don’t worry if it falls out while he/she is asleep. If your baby is drinking abnormally less amount of milk, immediately call your doctor. Babies often have minor illnesses such as running nose and coughs. If you are unable to figure out how serious an illness is, it is best to put your baby in his/her maxi cosi car seat and rush to the clinic for doctor help.
