Zhang Jun, China's top shot putter, finished fourth at the Vancouver Big Throw on Sunday, as Canada'sDylan Armstrong, the world No. 1, won the event that was part ofthe Harry Jerome International Track Classic. The 31-year-old Armstrong, a native of Kamloops, British Columbia, had a top throw of 21.24 meters to top the seven-man field, wellahead of runner-up Chang Ming-huang of Chinese Taipei (19.82).Canadian Justin Rhode was third at 19.55 meters, just ahead ofShanghai native Zhang whose top throw was 19.35. "No good today," said a disappointed Zhang who has been training inAtlanta, Georgia, for the last three months under Don Babbitt, thethrows coach for top-ranked American Reese Hoffa, the current worldNo.2. "My technique is no good. I think I can be better." The 29-year-old Zhang, whose all-time best throw is 20.41 meters, said his training at the University of Georgia had been beneficialas the plan was to compete in as many tournaments as possible aspart of a long-term training schedule. "I need to improve my timing. It's different than before as thetraining in America has helped me realize where I need to be. I wasexposed to a different training schedule where the coach stressedtraining technique, timing and rest. It's all a process." The training and tournaments are especially important right now asZhang, ranked 24th in the world, will find out in the coming weeksif he has secured a spot in this summer's London Olympic Games. Ifsuccessful, he will be the first Chinese male athlete to qualifyfor the event. "Any day now I'll find out if I'm participating in the Olympics.I've reached the international qualifying standards. I don't reallyknow all the (qualifying) procedures, but I've met the standardsand it looks very likely. All I know is soon." Armstrong, who had two 21-plus meter results among his five throwsSunday, and fouling out on another, said he was very happy with hisconsistency, something he would need going into London. In 2008, hefinished fourth at the Beijing Olympics, missing out on a bronzemedal by one centimeter. Following a grueling schedule in the past three weeks that hastaken him to meets in South Korea, Shanghai, the Czech Republic,Holland, Oregon, Norway and Vancouver, Armstrong admitted he was"very tired" but he was now entering a new training phase in therun-up to London. "I've got two new (weight training) programs coming up so I've gota few more meets that I'm going to be training through and then afew touch up meets right before the Olympics and then it'sobviously go time," he said. "I'm just going to work on my technique and I got to get a littlebit faster, a little bit stronger and get freshened up, but we'redefinitely on track right now." Armstrong, whose personal best throw is 22.21 meters at last year'sCanadian national championship, wouldn't make any predictions onwho his main competition will be in London. Poland's TomaszMajewski won the gold medal in Beijing with a throw of 21.51meters. "I don't really have one particular guy. We're all at a high level. It's very tight. Obviously, you can see the results. Throughout theDiamond League meets people were training hard for them as well. It's going to be a battle, no question.".
