There’s no question that the winters in Virginia can get very cold and dangerous. Oftentimes, homeowners find themselves adjusting the temperatures on the thermostat along with the changes in the weather outside. There is no rhyme or reason to what goes on outside the front door. Many times, there is very little warning before a major snowstorm hits the area. Hopefully, residents are prepared. Those that have lived in Virginia for many years understand the volatile winter weather and have learned to plan accordingly. They make sure to have plenty of food and water and emergency kits ready to go at any time. One more important task is to make sure the home’s heating source is serviced before the snow begins to fall. There are several ways to heat a home in Virginia. One popular choice is oil heat. The state of Virginia is actually a net importer of oil. The state first began drilling oil wells back in the 1860s and the first oil refinery was built in a place called Yorktown. Virginians choose oil heat for a number of reasons. Perhaps the number one reason on consumer’s minds is the cost of heat nowadays. It seems to be increasing every single season. That being said, oil heat is one of the least expensive ways to heat a home during the winter months. Many homeowners that use gas heat don’t realize that oil is a less expensive alternative. Oil heat is a safe choice for heating a home as well. The chance of oil heat lighting on fire for any reason is extremely slim. Many older homes in Virginia already have oil heat tanks in their basements. Even if the tank is no longer in use, it is still safe to keep in place. There are companies, however, that will go out to the home and remove the tank after carefully draining any remaining old oil. This is a perfectly safe process if the homeowner wishes to remove the tank. Making it through the harsh winters is a concern for all homeowners. Oil heating heats a home quickly and distributes the heat throughout the home so that it reaches each corner of the residence. Oil heat produces a nice, comfortable heat according to those that use this type of heat source. Since supply and demand is always a factor in the price of oil heat, most residents fill their oil heat tanks in the summer months before it gets expensive just before Old Man Winter rears his ugly head.
