Sociology is currently one of the youngest social sciences. Still, it is the main focus of Emory University graduate student Urmy Shukla. Just because it isn’t as researched and established as other social sciences yet does not diminish its worth to society – in fact, this increases it. Urmy Shukla believes that because there is still so much to learn and understand about sociology, more people need to realize its importance. Sociology is important to society because it directly teaches us about ourselves. Sociology is the study of peoples’ habits, traditions, religions, beliefs, and more. Urmy Shukla believes with a more in-depth look at these aspects of humanity, nations may be able to put aside differences. Urmy Shukla knows people believe ignorance is bliss, but she is a firm believer that knowledge is power. Understanding someone else always opens doors to sympathy and empathy, which are otherwise easy to block out. Urmy Shukla wants to discourage dismissing the values of others merely to get ahead yourself. She believes sociology is the key to that. Sociology is becoming more important in the workplace as well. While it used to only exist in academic pursuits, sociology backgrounds are now in demand for jobs regarding government, industry, and communications. For example, Urmy Shukla plans to use her sociology degree alongside economics on a global level. This would have been unheard of only 20 years ago! It is said that people entering the job market today are changing their careers multiple times in a lifetime. Urmy Shukla suggests using a sociology degree to open doors to many different career paths, and to avoid having to go back for schooling each time a different career path is chosen. Jobs are harder to come by, and Urmy Shukla understands this, however she believes sociology positions will always be in-demand and need to be taken seriously. Sociology is a way of looking at the world at large in order to better understand the world at small, states Urmy Shukla. It is the practice of problem solving and matching cause and effect together. Since Urmy Shukla was rather quiet growing up, the study of sociology was perfect because it requires a lot of quiet observation of the behaviors and practices of others.
