There could be a hundred reasons why stop mind mapping. But when the map is simply not working out for you then I think its reason enough that you stop whatever you’re doing! You don’t need to insist on using the map when it’s crap just because you were told by someone that it’s an amazing tool to help make all your confusions go away! That’s not good enough reason why you have to stick to it. The truth is it may or may not be able to help you achieve your goals. Maybe because you’re not doing it the right way or perhaps it’s not the right tool to use for that particular moment. So you need to find out first what the problem is why you’re mind map is turning out crappy. Like I said there could be many reasons. Let’s have a look at some of them: • too much focus on the map and not the content • focus on the wrong topics • too many branches, making the map blurry and unreadable • the map is too big, with too many details • the information is not properly organized When instead of focusing on the information you become too much concerned about how your mind map would look like then that’s definitely a problem. Having too much focus on the map and not on the content will not help you achieve your goals at all! How else would you be able to concentrate on the information when you’re too preoccupied by what colours to use or what images to put? It could be that you’re focusing on the wrong topics. You’re looking at an angle that you shouldn’t be looking and you’re forcing yourself to think that it’s the right topic to look at. Most certainly your map would go nowhere. Or perhaps your putting too many branches in your map that are not actually necessary. You see your mind map is supposed to make things simple for you. So when you complicate it then you can’t really expect that you get the clarity that you need. Let me stress to you this. Your mind map is there to help make information more clear and understandable. So when you make a map that is too big and full of details plus you fail to properly organize it then you might not get what you want out of it. This is why in mind mapping you use keywords it’s because you want to make things brief and concise. You’re brain remembers better this way rather than when you’re using very long sentences. Further the structure of a mind map is made in such a way to help you organize information better so when you choose to do your own way then you might as well expect that you will get a crappy map. So what to do when you’re put in the situation? Stop mind mapping and take a moment to think what you’re doing wrong then get back at if once you find out what’s making your map a crap.
