Think About The Specific Needs Of Team Members

Working with a team means you are going to have less time for each team member. It also means you have to develop a certain team dynamic and hopefully get your entire team working as one unit. Here are some tips to help you manage a team whilst trying to accommodate the needs of each team member.

Do not be too accommodating

You need to think about the specific needs of each team member, but you also need to remember that each team member is not equal, whilst also remembering that no team member is special. Allow me to clarify this a little, about how each are not equal and none are special.

Team members should not be treat as equal

Each team member is not equal because some are going to be more motivated and some are going to be more able. It would be unfair to treat the able and motivated staff the same way that you treat the under-motivated and less able staff members. The less able staff members will need more training and reassurance in order to get them to a higher standard.

The more motivated staff members should be allowed more freedom and even more allowances. If a highly-motivated staff member is late, or makes mistakes, then convey that you know they are trying their best and give them a pass. Show the under-motivated staff (and tell them) that if they are trying their best then you are more amenable.

No team member is special

Working to accommodate a team member's needs will leave you open to manipulation. The more you accommodate certain needs, then the more some staff members are going to come up with new needs. Be wary of being taken advantage of.

Micro staff training sessions

When you are working with a bigger team, you are going to have less time to develop each team member. This is why staff team training sessions are so useful. It only takes ten minutes to go over a certain subject as a group. And, if you do it at the same time every week, then you are going to create a feeling of order and routine (which your staff are going to need in such a situation).

Personal moments are all important

With a larger team, you are going to have very little time to develop a personal working relationship with each team member, and this is why you need to pay attention to those private moments you get with each staff member. Make sure that private moments do not come off badly.

Ask how they are; spend five minutes getting to know them. Even tell them they did a good job on a past occasion (within the last week). Do not compliment them on what they did today because it implies that every other occasion they have not done a good job.
