Locks: An Indispensable Invention

Business
To imagine a world without locks would not be a pleasant thing to look forward to. Eighteenth century brought forward the concept of modern locks we use today. Though there were earlier versions of it, they were not advanced enough to provide sufficient security. Initially, locks were used to safeguard homes alone, since people used to keep their valuables at home itself; concepts like banks, vaults and safes were far from imagination back in those days. The simple concept of locks is under continuous improvisation to keep pace with the needs of the changing world, as we live in a world where almost everything needs to be locked. Today we will discuss about the most important things we need to lock even in this era of advanced technology.

Door locks

These are the most common type of locks. Almost every house or buildings have these in use in order to protect belongings. They can be released with the help of a physical key. The working mechanism behind these locks is very simple. There are obstructions present inside a lock which correspond to the make of its respective key. This make allows the key to remove the obstructions and rotate freely inside a lock, allowing it to be released. Though, a number of designs have come up by now, the most commonly used locks are padlocks, deadbolts, knob locks and lever handle locks.

Automobile lock

In the case of cars, the actuator is the principle mechanism working behind the lock. It is used in both power locks and manual locks. It makes use of thin metal rods which are connected to the latch, to lock or unlock a car. When the latch is in the unlocked position, the outside door handle of the car is directly connected to the opening mechanism, allowing the door to open and close freely. Similarly, when the latch is in the locked position, the outside door handle gets disconnected from the working mechanism, barring the movement of the car's doors.

Electronic locks

An electronic lock operates with the help of electric current. Electronic locks make use of magnets or motors to activate the locks by allowing or blocking the electric supply to them. Electronic locks are the most trusted in terms of protecting confidential information. A wide variety of electronic locks are available these days to cater to the varying needs of protection.

Locks with numerical codes and passwords

These electronic locks are very popularly used for restricting entry in confidential areas. The use of passwords in these locks, which can be both alphabetical and numerical, is the reason behind its effectiveness.

Security proof

These electronic locks make use of a common smart card, which needs to be swiped to gain entrance. These are basically used in official places, to keep a check on the people entering the office area.

Biometrics

These locks are used to identify people with the help of their biological traits or features. There is a variety in the use of technology in the case of biometrics, as you can choose any technology ranging from fingerprint scanning, face recognition, retinal scanning, iris scanning, or voice identification to control access to restricted areas.

Locks, though small in size, give us the affirmation that things will be fine in our absence. We all bank upon this assurance for the safety of our belongings.

Transponder keys and car remotes are a hot favourite among vehicle owners. Visit us to know more about the different types of security locks.
