Craftsmanship and inventiveness are two interconnected terms that have no limitations or no boundaries anywhere. Anyone in any place of the world can inherit the characteristic traits and thus practice both in one way or the other. The only thing required to live up to these traits is the enthusiasm that turns everything impossible to possible. Building wooden boats is also an activity which is not bound to the professional builders only. Instead people can make their boats at their homes with the least help from the outer resources. Even the amateur builders can craft beautiful and highly functional boats with the help of the following information- Technique There are basically four techniques which are implied for wooden boat building. No matter how amateur or experienced you are these techniques are to be followed by everyone so as to utilize maximum efforts with the minimum wastage. 1.Stitch and Tape This is one of the most popular methods of making your boats. The fastest, cheapest and the easiest means gained popularity in 1960’s with first Do-It-Yourself experts on television. No special tools or forms are required in this method as everything is done with epoxy glue, stitches and the detailed cuts for creating the hull. Here, the stitching is done effectively with wires, cable ties or the duct tape. Once the stitches are in place, the area is well glued with the thick and consistent epoxy glue and can finally be covered with fibreglasses. 2.Ply on frame Ribs or the wooden frames are the beginning point of your boats. Frames are interconnected with one another where the first one known as keelson runs down the center. The sheer clams are the other two frames that run along each top side of the hull. Two more frames are then attached at the point where the bottom of your hull transits into the sides of it. All these joints are finally glued, bolted or screwed with strong polyurethane adhesives to make it a strong and reliable piece for your use. 3.Strip Planking It is a type of caravel planking where the hull is built over the forms with the help of strips of wood. As the strips are narrow shaping is not an issue in the boat building. The edges are fastened and glued with each other with the help of the modern epoxy adhesives instead of the fasteners. It is a common method used for making small boats or canoes. The method is well applied by those who hold a little or more experience in the make. 4.Clinker Ply This one is an ancient form of constructing wooden boats. The Vikings used wood planks as well as iron plates in such a way that the edges of the planks overlap each other. Though iron plates are no more into use yet wood planks certainly are still in. These boats are lighter in weight and efficient in their movements. These ways you can now better decide upon you wooden boats building and thus execute the correct plan of action for it. These techniques are certainly the basic types or methods of wooden boats building but these don’t confine your creativity and innovation in the process. Rather you can add as many ideas as you find feasible or practical with your boats.
