coil springs are used in practically all fields and almost each and every man-made machine. The reason for their popularity is due to their reliability, easily determined functional parameters and the low cost of manufacturing associated with mass scale production. Springs store mechanical energy when they stretched or compressed from their relaxed state and the release the stored energy when the force that compress or stretch them is removed. Springs have a wide range of applications ranging from shock absorption to protect mechanical parts of a machine to return the same amount of force that was used to compress it. They are also used in case where there is a need to retain some parts and mechanism. The most widely used of them is the compression coil spring that are designed in such a way that the extent of motion remains within the modulus of elasticity of the spring. The principle behind their working is called coil spring theory. The spring being uniform acts as a moment arm and gets compressed uniformly. There are various types of springs that in use. The basic types of springs are compression, tension, torsion and extension. Compression springs are made with uniform spacing between the coil rows to limit the displacement within the spring. The tension spring on the other hand have no gaps whatsoever and start from a relaxed state. Extension springs can be compared to tension spring but the most basic difference is that they do not start from relaxed state and never achieve it either. The torsion spring is responsible for providing holding force to the machines and mostly clothes pin. There are some other differences upon which the springs are classified. There are far too many variations in the basic types such the ends of springs and the type of sections they come with. A simple vehicle can have numerous types of springs such as the helical spring and the progressively wound spring. The characteristics of the springs depend extensively on the material and specifications of the spring and simple changes to the length and diameter of the wire can bring significant change in the performance characteristics. The coil springs are very dangerous to work with as they store vast amount of energy in comparison to their size and hence can cause critical injury if not handled correctly.
