One of the products in The Art of Shaving lineup is shaving brushes. Purpose of the Brush A shaving brush is used to apply shaving cream to the face, to lather it up, and to lift the whiskers from the face. The shaving cream is used to soften and to moisturize the whiskers, and the brush is used to apply the cream where it needs to go. Description of a Shaving Brush The tips of the brushes are made out of badger hair, and three types of badger hair are used: pure, fine, and silvertip. Badger hair is used because it is soft and holds moisture well. The handles of the brushes are available in two shapes and four colors: black, ivory, chrome, and horn (or brown). One handle has an oval shape and resembles the shape of a football with the ends cut off. The other handles tapers outward to a circular shape near the end with the bristles. Both of these brushes have flat bottoms so that they will stand on their own with the bristles pointing up. However, the preferred way of drying out a brush is to hang it from a stand with the bristles pointing down. If it hangs that way, the water will drain from the brush, and it will completely dry out. Battery Powered Shaving Brush One type of brush has a battery powered motor that oscillates the bristles. The oscillating bristles produce a rich lather and to help the whiskers to stand up so that the razor can cut them down short. The handle is finished in chrome with black accents. The power button starts the oscillating, and an automatic shutoff will turn it off after two minutes if it has been accidentally turned on. The The Art of Shaving produces and sells a lineup of badger hair shaving brushes.
