When we bought our new house, because interest rates are low, and it is still a buyers market, we were able to get a really good price. This left us with the option of making an upgrade or two around the house. We discussed new carpet in the bedrooms, tile in the kitchen and bathrooms, or updated furniture for the living room. None of these fixes were necessary, but given extra spending money they would all have made for nice luxuries. Then, over lunch with my parents of all people, it was suggested that a hot tub might be nice. I laughed. They said that they were serious. Life can be stressful and jumping in the warm massaging water a couple of times a week can be the sort of experience that is relaxing and helps you put life into perspective. After a lot of discussion Jim and I agreed that getting new carpet would really be fixing something that wasn't broken and wouldn't have a huge benefit. Meanwhile, the hot tub could be something we enjoyed and actually bettered our life. We didn't choose the most expensive model, but the night the hot tub was installed I knew we had made a great decision. I hadn't been in a bathing suit in years, and was a little nervous to see if it still fit properly, but as I stepped into our newest toy, and Jim complimented me, it gave me that same special feeling that I had when we first started dating. Whether it be a ten-minute dip before bed, a night drinking red wine and trying to forget everything that had gone on all week, a place for friends to enjoy with us, or a romantic evening, the hot tub is incredibly versatile. It can be a part of the day, or the focal point of the night. It is available for five minutes or three hours. It is a novelty item for friends and family, a place to relieve stress, and a great location to pretend we're still kids, just enjoying each others company. In the years that followed buying the house, we did redo the bathrooms and slowly but surely replaced items that were outdated or needed modernizing. However, making an investment in ourselves first and in the upgrades to home second, is a direction I would highly recommend. The hot tub immediately became our escape and destination to relax, talk, and be intimate. Who knew how smart Mom and Dad were.
