A locked knee is a general term used to describe the condition when knees are unable to either flex or extend. Normally, a knee can flex of about 135 degrees and can extend or fully lock in zero degrees. There are two general causes of locked knees. First, is the mechanical block of the normal knee motion. In this case, something is caught between the knees’ mechanism such as a torn cartilage. The patient will not be able to move, bend or extend the knee until the block is removed. The second cause is because of a severe pain. The pain is unbearable that the patient can no longer use the knees. In this case, a medical assistance is promptly needed.
