Brushing boots or sometimes referred to as splint boots are used to protect the horses legs during exercise. They fit on the horses lower leg protecting the cannon bone and fetlock joint. Brushing is when one hoof catches the other leg or the fetlock brushes the other fetlock. Brushing injuries are more likely to happen on the horses forelegs than then hind. Brushing boots are ideal for schooling, lunging, long lining, jumping or general hacking. Traditional brushing boots are made of leather but more modern brushing boots are made of synthetic materials like neoprene. Brushing boots normally have three wide Velcro straps that pull around the front of the horses leg. Some brushing boots have straps that loop through rings and fasten back on themselves. This prevents the boots slipping down the horses leg when moving. They have a strike pad on the inside of the boot which protects the horse cannon bone and fetlock joint. Brushing boots can also be used for protecting young or excitable horses legs when out in the field. They shouldn't be left on for too long as they can cause rubbing and sore patches if they get wet, sweaty or very dirty.
