American Societies and Associations of Plastic Surgeons There is little to no need to rely on strangers or discount surgery ads to help a potential client weed through the many people claiming to be plastic surgeons. All anyone has to do is find a medical association website and they can search for board certified doctors by specialty and zip code for one nearest to home or the office, at their convenience. But sometimes the convenience and safety of that reliable information still isn't enough for some cosmetic surgery seekers. They want cheap and they want it now, which concerns many plastic surgeons because that desperation will either lead those same people back into their care for reconstruction or to the nearest hospital intensive care unit fighting for their lives. That fact is that these days there are ways to obtain or produce a knock off of a cosmetic procedure device or solution and claim that one is authorized to administer it. It is how so many lives are compromised; so many bodies are damaged and require reconstructive surgery or many people end up losing their lives as a result of these botched procedures. This is why seeking out the cheapest and quickest medical procedures is gravely discouraged, especially when it comes to those patients with no patience who are intent on leaving the protection of the United States' medical regulations and legal ramifications to go to Mexico, China or small obscure countries for what they believe are generic brand fillers, products and implants. There is no such thing as off brand medical supplies; they are either safely manufactured because they are created under a regulated system and carry a strong reputation or they don't. Anyone can make a knock off and try to make money off of someone's desperation, but trustworthy plastic surgeon's everywhere are trying to educate the men and women out there who would much rather risk their lives for cheap surgery than save up, educate themselves, follow up with a surgeon they can trust and then sleep soundly as they heal with proper medical attention. This is much more preferable instead of being left to die like some people who travel to other countries and get injections or invasive surgery in a stranger's kitchen who doesn't even speak the same language. This is why plastic surgeons like Dr. Kaufman wrote about his concern over the continuing pursuit and dangers of what is being called "Medical Tourism". His article pertaining to his thoughts on the trend can be found at American Society for Plastic Surgeon's website in which he poignantly states that "Medical tourism companies and destination health care facilities benefit from maximizing profits without the necessary medical knowledge, legal responsibilities (or) regret." Hopefully it is enough to make someone think twice and consider their whole health instead of just their wallet.
