By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter FRIDAY, August 3 As the United States bakesunder the summer sun, dermatologists often warn of cancer risksposed by ultraviolet (UV) sunlight. But research now points to anew and ubiquitous indoor source of these harmful rays: eco-friendly compact LED House Light Bulbs. Scientists say they found widespread chipping or cracking in thephosphor surface coating of nearly all the compact fluorescentbulbs they examined, allowing UV rays to escape. Most of the bulbs "have cracks in the phosphor coating, probablydue to the fact that the coating is brittle and has trouble makingthe tight bends required to make these bulbs compact," explainedstudy lead author Miriam Rafailovich, a professor of materialsscience and engineering and director of the Garcia Center forPolymers at Engineered Interfaces at Stony Brook University inStony Brook, N.Y. "As a result, we observed, by eye, defects innearly all the bulbs that we studied." And, Rafailovich added that, "skin cells exposed to emissions showed the same damage as thoseexposed to UV light" when placed in close range to a CFL bulb.
The study is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and ispublished in a recent issue of the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology . As Americans grow more concerned about environmental and energyissues, millions have made the switch from the old incandescentbulbs to compact fluorescents. The U.S. National Institutes ofHealth notes that the newer technology uses roughly 75 percent lessenergy than standard incandescent bulbs.
Each compact fluorescent bulb has a phosphor coating applied to itsnarrow glass tubing. The coating is designed to both enhance thebulb's luminescence capacity while at the same time absorbing UVradiation that would otherwise be emitted. But the authors warn that if the bulb's surface area is riddledwith "bald" spots, UV protection is lost. To see how widespread the problem might be, the Stony Brook teamset out to purchase a wide array of compact fluorescent bulbscommercially available in stores across the Suffolk and Nassaucounty regions of Long Island, N.Y. They measured each bulb for levels of UV emissions, while at thesame time examining each for signs of cracking in its phosphorcoating.
