Different properties in and around Pattaya have different attractions for different types of people. Those who like to buy their own home often favour the condominium complexes, which allow foreigners to have their names on the property deeds – an attribute which is restricted due to a law stating that only Thais can own Thai land. However, those without the finances to buy have more choice for renting. Apartment complexes are certainly popular, but a house has significant advantages for those staying for a long time. The most significant amongst these advantages is having your own appliances to use. Apartments often lack full kitchens or utility rooms, often having shared washing machines. Most rental houses will have their own washing machines, meaning no queues to use it, no money slot and no having to worry about your clothing going missing if you don't go to collect it immediately the load finishes. This last one is an unlikely circumstance, but you never can tell. The other significant bonus is having plenty of space available, even in the smallest house for rent. Pattaya does have some extremely small properties available, including entire apartments which are no bigger than a single bedroom. However, houses will generally at least have some kind of living room. This means that you are not reduced to using your bed as something to sleep, eat and relax on. Houses for rent are generally only available in East Pattaya – which is commonly referred to “the dark side” due to the relative lack of street lights and activity. It is a much quieter and less densely populated part of the city. This can be a double-edged sword because, while it does provide a much quieter lifestyle, it also puts you further from the fun and frolics of Pattaya. More to the point, it gives you a longer journey to reach many of the important facilities like healthcare centres, supermarkets and other essential services. It can also be quite tricky finding a taxi not only willing to go far into the dark side, but who also knows where they're going when they get there. One of the surprising advantages to a house can be the remarkably low cost. If the rent is shared, a good two-bedroom house can cost significantly less than an equivalent apartment or condo. This is largely true of the dark side generally, which is considered – for unknown reasons – to be a less favourable place to reside.
