A teenaged driver, a mother, and her three young kids were all rushed to the hospital in serious condition following a head on collision early morning in Phoenix, Arizona. According to local police reports, the crash took place just after 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of 36th Street and Southern Avenue, where a teenaged driver in a Mitsubishi Gallant struck a curb in the westbound lanes of Southern, overcorrected, and veered into eastbound lanes, directly into a Pontiac G6 sedan. The crash inflicted extensive damages to both vehicles, and every passenger aboard the two cars, including a 5 year old girl, a 3 year old boy, and a 1 year old girl. The three young girls and their mother were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition, where one of the children remains in extremely critical condition. When crews from the Phoenix Fire Department arrived on the scene, they reported that the woman had pulled each of her children out of the vehicle. All were firmly fastened in child safety seats at the time of the accident. The teen driver was ejected from his Mitsubishi in the crash, inflicting serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police at the scene reported symptoms of alcohol or drug impairment at the scene, and pending his release from the hospital, he will face charges of driving under the influence. Should any of the young passengers lose their lives, his charges are likely to yield a significant punishment. Following the accident, police shut down both lanes of Southern Avenue for multiple hours to allow for cleanup of the accident, which was extensive, and to give investigators the chance to comb the scene for move evidence as to what may have caused the teen to cause such a damaging accident. Both vehicles suffered major damages and came to rest outside of lanes, though debris was thrown across a wide radius. Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol creates serious danger, both for you and those around you. Your decision making abilities and reaction times are significantly reduced as speeds increase and maneuvers become more reckless. As obstacles and obstructions come towards you more rapidly, your ability to avoid them diminishes, leading to dangerous accident situations such as this. The teenaged driver, who has yet to be identified, is lucky to have escaped with his life, though at least one of the young girls may not be so lucky. Should her young life be lost, the teen could face significant legal repercussions, brought on by a wrongful death lawyer to seek compensation for the girl’s family to help pay for funeral and burial expenses and more. If you’ve been drinking, the driver’s seat is the last place in the world you should be. Just a single incident can result in a loss of life, a significant financial penalty, and extensive jail time.
