Often times, I get a request from the owner to de-mat their dog and keep the length of the coat because they like their dog looking fluffy. As a groomer, I am more concerned about humanity toward the pet rather than de-matting to make him/her look good and acceptable to the owner. Depending on your brushing regimen and how quickly your pet’s coat tangles up, you need to determine the frequency of how often you can bring your pet for grooming.Typically, this is between 4 - 6 weeks. When you follow this schedule the pet remains in a healthy coat condition, clean as well as stylized or fluffy if you will. De-matting is painful. It involves ripping the hair off because a brush or a comb will not go through it.Now, even though a lot of de-matting products are out there, sometimes, it is impossible to de-mat without causing pain or damaging the hair. This is due to the closeness of the mat to the skin. The only safe and humane alternative is to shave the pet down and start over again. If the owner does not have the time to brush the pet, they can bring him/her to the groomer for a bath and brush out. This can be done once a week, every two weeks or once a month. It all depends on your budget and how well maintained you would like your pet to be. Why is it important to avoid mats? Mats when left alone can turn into pelts. The tightness of the pelt will inhibit the skin from breathing (so to speak). It becomes the perfect place to harbor fleas and parasites. Now imagine the discomfort that comes not only from the tightness of the skin but also the flea bites and/or ulcers. Some pets are allergic to flea bites, and may develop flea dermatitis. The dog will scratch to the extent that the skin may get raw and loss of hair may occur. We owe our pets a good life and a healthy life.To do that we need to take care of their needs. And that qualifies as humane. Canine Massage offer a variety of services for pets.
