Orthodontist Ferntree Gully (WFO), which is made up of the orthodontic specialty associations or societies from 108 countries has recognized the PBO along with 16 other orthodontic boards globally. In 2007, the WFO Executive Committee appointed Dr. Ermelinda Sabater-Galang, chair of the PBO, to serve in the WFO Committee on National and Regional Orthodontic Boards, which convened during the Seventh International Orthodontic Congress held recently in Sydney, Australia. Hence, not all dentists are orthodontists. An orthodontic specialist should have undergone at least two to three years of formal full time orthodontic training in an accredited graduate school locally or internationally. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recognizes the University of the Philippines, MCU, University of the East and Centro Escolar University locally. An orthodontic practitioner may also have taken and passed the four-phased PBO examinations thereby obtaining the Diplomate status (DPBO) conferred by the Philippine Board of Orthodontics making him a Board Certified Orthodontist. The PBO has been conducting examinations since its establishment in 1980. To date, a total of 191 candidates have successfully passed the various phases of the PBO examinations.
