While Brazil has made strides economically in the last few decades, the northeastern area of the country suffers from some of the most devastating poverty in Latin America. For over five years, one of the most significant humanitarian empowerment efforts in Brazil has been spearheaded by the international Humana People to People (HPP) movement. Humana People to People Brasil, also known as Humana para Povo Brasil, was founded in May 2007. The organization develops humanitarian projects in rural municipalities with low scores on the Human Development Index in the Brazilian state of Bahia, particularly Cansanção, Quijingue and Itiuba. The group's work is based upon the concept of Empowerment of the Family Agricultors. This concept encompasses the notions of the individual as a transformative agent of society, solidarity, and active social organization and participation of those involved with the Humana People to People Brasil projects. Family economics is a vital plank of Humana People to People Brasil's efforts. Families with a secure income stream are able to focus upon the health and education of family members. Humana works to promote the progress of rural families through advanced farming methods. Humana People to People Brasil also encourages families to establish organic vegetable gardens for income, and facilitates contact between small farmers and governmental programs designed to aid family productive groups. On a related front, Humana People to People Brasil seeks to establish social inclusion and less reliance upon government assistance programs via the stimulation of rural production. Humana encourages the production of fruit pulp, cassava flour, honey and other small-scale products that can empower and develop communities economically and socially. Humana People to People Brasil also encourages the sustainable development of the environment through workshops, presentations, and lectures. Planet AidCommunities cannot develop if citizens - particularly children - suffer from poor health and limited access to good nutrition. Humana People to People Brasil offers parents educational programs for improving child nutrition and the avoidance of disease through classes and campaigns concerning hygiene and health, particularly concerning the avoidance of dengue fever. Similarly, access to safe water in rural Brazil hampers progress and devastates community health. Humana People to People Brasil works in conjunction with the public initiative Água para Todos (Water for All) in efforts to increase access to the public water supply, digging down water tubes, and building community water tanks. Humana People to People Brasil works with local partners to increase citizen participation in municipal councils. Humana's trained instructors assist in building the agricultural and social capacity of citizens of Bahia and work with children and young people in the development of their political, social, and cultural awareness. Humana People to People Brasil is a non-profit association affiliated with the international HPP movement, and has qualified as an Organization of Public Interest in the Civil Society since January 2008. Humana People to People Brasil is associated with the Municipal Council of Social Assistance in Cansanção and the Municipal Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents in Cansanção and Quijingue. The international HPP movement was founded in Denmark in 1977 and is currently headquartered in Murgwi, Shamva, Zimbabwe. HPP has established 34 development organizations in 43 countries and has assisted approximately 11.5 million people in individual and community economic and health empowerment.
